I was really surprised to see this quote as it is the first time I have seen anyone use the word austerity. Austerity basically means to live close to the edge without actually living there. It is a way out of having to live with the financial restrictions imposed by the government. This quote is used in everyday life with people talking about how they are trying to live on a tight budget when in reality, they are just taking it easy with spending money.
The idea is that they are sticking to what they can afford with no worries about having more than enough. Austerity is taking it easy and living moderately, which is in contrast to austerity.
